By  1855 the United States had streached from coast to coast, but all the territory was not organised into states there were a lot of territories. (note Arkansas became a state in 1836)
Garryowen was the marching tune of the seventh calvary, who were beaten by the sioux in the battle of the little big horn. In this clip the rough riders are shown embarking for the Philipians dueing the Spanish-Americian war.

This is what the map of the area that the United States looked like between 1776-1866. The fifty states that now make up the United States were not always part of the Union and it was not preordained that the United States would become what it became. The French, Spanish, British, and Mexicans all had claims to this territory.
